During 1994, the WECOMA was put "on the net" via a new fiber optic cable pulled down the ship's causeway, linking it to the network of the Hatfield Marine Science Center. The dockside connection provides convenient access to and from the ship's net to the Internet. Scientific parties utilize it while in port for reading e-mail, file transfers, and remote access from their home institutions to shipboard computers. The Marine Technician group uses the connectionn for access to shipboard computers from their offices Corvallis.
