Purpose

Scripps has been developing long and short baseline seafloor tiltmeters for deployment on volcanic terrains for several years. This cruise represents an important test of these instruments on an active volcanic ridge. We are also likely to take the opportunity to deploy some Australian magnetometers on the ridge.

Itinerary

• Newport to Cleft Segment of Juan de Fuca (44 deg 40N, 130 deg 18W)
• Deploy magnetometers within 50km of the Ridge on way to station
• Deploy tilt instruments within 5km of station
• Return to Newport.

The second cruise will be the inverse of this one (recovering instruments).

• Small crane on main deck for deployment and recovery of OBS
• CTD cable through main deck aft A-frame, with slip rings fitted to winch
• GPS navigation
• Laboratory access to hull-mounted 12kHz acoustic transducer connections
