W9407A/Devol/Benthic Carbon Oxidation

General Information
- Filing Date: 15 June, 1994
Cruise Number: W9407A
Title: Benthic Carbon Oxidation
Contract/Grant Number: OCE91-16275
Principal Investigator(s): Dr. Allan Devol, UW
Purpose
- The purpose of the cruise is to measure the exchange of solutes between the
sediments and overlying water on the Washington State shelf and slope. We are
especially interested in exchanges of nitrogen because these sediments are typical of
many marine sediments and we wish to evaluate the importance of marine sediments in the
global nitrogen cycle.
Itinerary
- Cruise track will be from Newport to 47 12N, 128W. All work will be done along
and east-west section at about 47N. In the middle of the cruise we will make a
mid-cruise port call at either Aberdeen or Astoria to change personnel. After
concluding the work we will off load in Seattle and the Wecoma will then transit to
Newport. See attached figure in original.
Radioactive Use
- YES. An isotope plan has been submitted separately.
Sampling Plan
- We will load the Wecoma in Newport on the 19th of July and we plan to depart on 20
July (probably in the middle of the day). It should take about a day to get to the
first station (46 12N, 128W) where we will being box coring. We will then move east to
a location where the water depth is about 300m and deploy our benthic tripod, which will
remain on the bottom for about 24 h during which time we will take box cores and do a
CTD/hydrocast. After recovery of the tripod we need about 24 h to turn it around.
During this period we will steam to deeper water to take box core samples. We will
continue deploying the tripod and taking cores at different locations along the section
outlined on the accompanying chart.
