Purpose
-
This is the first leg of a two leg experiment to study natural seismicity
on the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca mid-ocean ridge (48 deg N,
129 deg W). The objective of this leg is to deploy 15 seismographs on the
ocean floor which will be recover ed two months later during the second
leg. 54 small 10 lb. explosive charges will be detonated just below the
sea surface so that the positions of the seismographs can be accurately
determined after completion of the experiment.
Itinerary

- June 4-5
- Transit directly from Newport, OR to 48 deg N, 129 deg W
- June 5-11
- Experimental operations in the area extending from 47 deg 50' N
to 48 deg 5' N and 129 deg W to 129 deg 25' W. These operations will
comprise
- 48 hour test deployment and recovery of 2 Office of Naval research
ocean-bottom seismometers (OBSs)
- Wire line tests of OBS pressure cases acoustic releases
- Deployment of 15 OBS's
- Discharge 54 x 10 lb. explosive charges. Each charge will comprise two 5 lb. PENTOLYTE
boosters, one #6 Engineer Special fuse cap detonator, 2 ft of PETN detonator cord

- The OBSs will not be assembled until shortly before deployment.
The frames will be on deck. The releases, recording and acquisition
pressure cases, and recovery aids will be in racks and boxes in the main
hydro labs. Beecher Wooding at WHOI will forwa rd a preferred layout to
Ship Operations at OSU upon receipt of a deck plan.

- 1 explosives magazine @ 1,000 lbs, footprint 6' x 6' footprint to contain
- 540 lbs. PENTOLYTE boosters in 5 lb. charges.*
- 150 ft. of PETN detonator cord.*

- 3 deck boxes of hardware, handling gear, etc. @ 150 lbs. each
