In home port ( Newport ) and ONE-DAY port calls in other ports the scientific party will normally board the vessel at or after 0800 on the day of departure from port. Meals will be served commencing with lunch on the day of departure. The scientific party will normally leave the vessel prior to 1630 on the day of return to port. Dinner will not normally be available.
When arranged during Preliminary cruise planning, the scientific party and support personnel may berth on the vessel within the limit of available scientific berths. Breakfast and lunch will be available to the scientific party if otherwise available to the crew. Dinner will be served only if the number to be served justifies the cost of a second shift cook. The same procedures will apply to any post- cruise unloading operations extending beyond the day of arrival.
In ports other than Newport (two or more days in port) - the scientific party may board the vessel after lunch on the day before departure and must leave the ship before lunch on the day after arrival. Only one scientific party, maximum of 18, can be accommodated for meals at any given time. Persons on board for two consecutive cruises or legs may berth and eat on board if the regular crew is on board. If the crew is off the ship, then scientific berthing and meals will not be available.
Special circumstances will be accommodated whenever necessary and may require a modification of these procedures. Cruise planners should consult with the Marine Superintendent in advance.
