Customs, Immigration and Immunizations

Individuals are responsible for meeting U.S. and foreign nation customs, immigration and immunization regulations. OSU assumes no responsibility if these regulations are not met, nor will we make arrangements for individual members of the scientific party. However, the following paragraphs offer some advice. Research vessels have no special status. Enforcement can range from lax to extremely strict. Individuals should obtain further details from U.S. customs offices, consulates, passport offices, travel agencies and our designated port agents.

Individuals are responsible for declaring to U.S. customs on reentry, all items purchased abroad. Personal items, particularly those of high value and obvious foreign manufacture, should be registered with U.S. customs before departure using custom form 4457, "Certification for Personal Effects Taken Abroad." Otherwise these items could be subject to duty on reentry.

Passports will be required on some foreign cruises. These may be obtained from a passport office or through most municipal or county clerk offices. Six to eight weeks lead time should be anticipated. Most travel agencies can provide advice on passports, visas, landing permits and taxes, and tourist cards.

Immunization requirements vary by nation and geographical region. Travel agencies or your local county health department should be able to provide advice. Foreign travelers are encouraged to carry an up-to-date "International Certificate of Vaccination," U.S. Public Health Service Form 731. These can be obtained from municipal and county health departments.
