When a cruise is planned in foreign waters, the Principal Investigator is required to prepare a Cruise Prospectus and Foreign Clearance Request form (furnished by Ship Operations). Final copies will then be forwarded by Ship Operations to the Department of State for processing. These forms must be submitted within the specific lead time required by the host country (up to EIGHT months in advance). Written notification will be sent by the Department of State to the institution when a researches cruise is approved by the foreign government, with any post cruise obligations stated thereon. The "UNOLS Handbook for International Operations of U.S. Scientific Research Vessels," Lee R. Stevens, January 1986, serves as a reference that can be obtained from OSU Ship Operations upon request.
