Scheduling

Marine Technicians
The Marine Technician
assigned to each cruise provides the interface
between the ship user and the ship facility. A Marine Technician is carried
on every cruise with rare exception. He/she is responsible for scheduling
shared-use equipment required for each cruise, for assisting with
loading/unloading and setup logistics, and for coordination of shipboard
scientific operations. Chief Scientists and Party Chiefs should contact the
Marine Technician assigned to their cruises well before the cruise to discuss
logistics and planning. The Marine Technicians can answer any questions about
facilities, services and shipboard loading and off loading logistics. Please
make loading and unloading plans through the Marine Technicians.
At sea, the Marine Technicians have some responsibilities for operation
of certain shipboard equipment (scientific echosounders, XMIDAS system, CTD,
GPS, LORAN, Shipboard Computers). The Marine Technician will assist with
operation of shared-use equipment and with scientific operations as time
permits, but will not be responsible for project-specific equipment. Duty
hours for Marine Technicians at sea will generally be 0700-1900. If you will
have specific duties for the Marine Technician outside those listed above,
please contact the Marine Technician before the cruise date to discuss them.
Any questions or problems you might have at sea should be directed to the
Marine Technician aboard.
The Marine Technicians are here to help you. Please feel free to call
with any questions or problems.
Electronics Technician
An Electronics Technician (ET) is usually carried on each cruise as a
member of the scientific party. He is responsible for the maintenance and
repair of all shipboard electronic systems (including scientific support
equipment), and to assist in communications. Assistance to the scientific
party is possible and should be arranged through the Marine Technician. The
ET assigned to a cruise is available to provide advice and assistance in the
setup or installation of project equipment.
